Why do babies need skin care?

The epidermis of baby’s skin is thin, and it is only around 50% of adult’s skin. It is very delicate and can be hurt even by a little friction. As the baby’s skin contains less lipids which functions as the barrier, it is easy to dry up and the keratin of the skin surface is easy to be distracted. Due to the immature skin structure, baby’s skin is not only easier to dry up than adult’s skin, but also less resistant to bacteria and stimuli that may cause itching, irritations and allergic reactions. According to medical research data, appropriate skin care since newborn age may help to maintain your baby’s skin barrier and prevent skin problems such as onset, atopy etc. in the future.

About water
The relationship of water and cosmetic

Purified, deep ocean and spring water are main options for cosmetic formulators.

Purified water is mechanically filtered or processed and generally used in chemical experiments, cosmetics and personal care products. The skin penetration level of purified water is high compare to tap water as the impurities have been removed. However, it contains no minerals or nutrients.

Deep ocean water is the water from a depth of over 200m, which contains rich minerals as the sunlight cannot reach. It has been utilized in cosmetic products for its moisturizing effects and to improve the barrier function of skin.

How about mountain spring water?
Spring water is pure and rich in minerals as it has been filtered naturally and has dissolved the mineral contents in the rocks it flows over. The water particles of spring water as well are said to be 1/2 or 1/3 smaller than purified water. Hence, spring water often has higher skin penetration level and moisturizing effect than purified water thanks to the abundance of minerals.

The relationship of water and human body

The percentage of water in adult ranges from 60-65%.The percentage of water in infants is much higher, typically around 75-80%. We can live without food for a few weeks or so but not without water. Hence, water is essential for life and in order to stay alive we must stay hydrate both inside and out.

Basic Understanding of Baby Skin

A baby’s skin is very delicate and sensitive.
We asked Dr. Shutaro Manabe from Manabe Family Clinic about
the basic breakdowns of a baby’s skin, which might be unknown to some people.

Q1. How delicate is a baby’s skin?

A baby’s skin contains only about 2/3 of the moisture content, about half the amount of sebum, and only about 50% of the thickness of an adult’s skin. Therefore, a baby’s skin can be damaged easily even by a slightest friction. Keeping a baby’s skin clean and moist can improve the barrier-like function, can prevent rough skin, and can prevent bacteria and viruses from entering the body. So, it is very important to take proper cares of a baby’s delicate skin.

Q2. What are the important points for a baby’s skincare?

(1) Keeping clean

A baby has same numbers of sweat glands as an adult, so he/she sweats about 2 to 3 times as much as an adult. In addition, a baby’s skin can be soiled easily with poop, pee, messes etc.
Please choose a natural hypoallergenic soap which you can wash your baby from head to toe, wash off gently, and keep clean easily.

(2) Moisturizing

A baby’s skin is in a near-neutral state and is prone to skin problems.
Preventing dryness will not only reduce the roughness of skin, will also prevent bacteria and viruses from entering the body. It is important to take a proper moisturizing care of the entire body, not just the areas where you find dry. When choosing skincare products for a baby, please notice how sensitive and delicate it is, and how easy it is prone to irritation. Please choose skincare products which do not contend fragrance, coloring agents, parabens (preservatives) etc..

(3) Ultraviolet rays’ damage protection

Although some says it is better to not using sunscreen as much as possible until a baby becomes 3 months old, but a baby’s skin may have greater damages caused by ultraviolet rays impairing to an adult, because a baby’s skin is much thinner and delicate. It is important to choose a sunscreen product that does not irritate but protect a baby’s skin from the damaging effects of ultraviolet rays.
